Ponda: With the traditional grazing land located at Shitol- Butkhamb being fenced, the villagers of Vere- Vagurme, on Tuesday, threatened to agitate if any project comes up in the area.

According to locals, a private party has purchased around 2 lakh square meters of the land in the area, and has started fencing it.

The locals have claimed that the particular land is the only grazing land in the village, and also a forest land, which was being used by their ancestors, and claimed it to be a part of the village communidade.

The villagers informed that they have a “small shrine in the area, and perform  rituals annually there. Besides, some villagers have cashew plantations in the nearby area and also a playground. But somehow the private party has purchased the land by keeping the villagers in the dark and has started fencing it, thereby blocking access to the forest area.”

They have decided to oppose the development of the land at any cost, and with same intention, inspected the area along with sarpanch Satyawan Shilkar and other panchayat members.

Following the inspection, the villagers demanded explanation from the panchayat about the exact nature of the project coming up in the area.

Around 15 villagers led by Sachit Palkar were a part of the group who inspected the area.

Speaking to this daily, the sarpanch said that he is not aware about the project coming up at Shitol, and the panchayat has not received any proposal.

“We have heard that the land has been purchased by somebody and fencing work has started. That’s it. Now, the villagers are scared that their grazing land and also the land where they used to perform some rituals annually will be converted into a housing complex,” said Shilkar and added that he is with the villagers.
