VALPOI: Tension prevailed in Pissurlem in Sattari on Tuesday after one group of villagers shifted the sacred pitcher (kalash) of the village deity without the knowledge of the other group.
A scuffle broke out between two groups at the Navdurga temple in Pissurlem over the sacred pitcher, Valpoi police sources said.
Villagers gathered at the temple on Tuesday on the occasion of Dussehra. After one group left after completing the rituals, a second group came to the temple, which then moved the sacred kalash to the under-construction temple without intimating the other villagers, police said.
When the first group heard of it, they gathered at the temple and a heated argument broke out between the two sets of villagers which eventually turned in a physical fight.
Police were called to site and personnel from both Bicholim and Valpoi stationsarrived at the temple site.
Sattari mamlatdar Anil Sardesai, who also came to sort out the argument, tried to arrive at an amicable settlement but in vain. While one group insisted that the kalash be shifted back to its original location, the other group steadfastly maintained that it had not moved the sacred pitcher.
It is learnt that the matter of shifting the sacred pitcher is in the sessions court and that the temple committee has been directed to maintain status quo.
However, on Tuesday, a member of one of the groups shifted the sacred kalash without taking the villagers into confidence.
Deputy collector Mangaldas Gaonkar also intervened in the matter and said that if both the groups were not ready to settle the matter amicably, then the authorities would be forced to lock the temple. Both groups however refused to budge from their stand. Later, in the presence of a strong police force the temple door was locked.
