MARGAO: Expressing his disapproval over the failure of the authorities in putting in place adequate measures to tackle Margao’s garbage issues, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Thursday warned of taking to the streets over the issue. He cautioned the government against trying the patience of the people.
“If any government official starts playing the fool and starts doing timepass, we are capable of doing in Margao what we did in Porvorim, and everybody will have to bear the brunt. If the government is not functioning and fails to resolve Margao’s garbage issues, then people won’t keep quiet. They will take to the streets. Before they do that the government will do well to meet its timelines,” Sardesai told Reporters after holding a meeting with the chairperson and chief officer of the MMC at the Margao municipality.
Asking MMC chief officer Siddhivinayak Naik to initiate the process of setting up two bio-methanation plants in the town by Monday, Sardesai warned of “action” against the MMC on Tuesday if they failed to do so.
“Don’t think only Babu Ajgaokar can gherao you. We can also do it in a much superior manner taking with us good people and taking up good issues. Because we are now in the Opposition, and that is our job,” Sardesai said.
The Fatorda MLA was alluding to tourism minister Manohar Ajgaokar who has led many morchas on the MMC in the past particularly over issues concerning vendors in the Gandhi market.
Earlier in the meeting, Sardesai finalised three spots in Fatorda for setting up baling machines — at the KTC bus stand, TB sanatorium and the old market area where, he said, the bio methanation plant will also be set up.
He also asked the MMC to get cracking over installation of the statue of Opinion Poll movement leader Jack de Sequeira at the Opinion Poll square near Ravindra Bhavan, the issue that led to a ruckus at the meeting of the council held later in the day.
