Ponda: Taking cognisance of the post-monsoon showers, the public works department (PWD) has postponed the repair work of the Borim bridge along the Ponda-Margao highway to October 21 to 30.

During the repair work, one lane of the bridge will be closed for traffic during the 10-day period, informed PWD officials.

The 431-metre-long Borim bridge connecting Ponda to Salcete has developed problem to the finger type expansion joint in the middle due to which heavy vehicles passing from over the bridge are witnessing jerks at the joint.

Taking note of it, PWD has decided to take up proper repair work of the bridge for 10 days during which finger type expansion joint of the bridge will be replaced with new one and micro concreting will be done on the joints to strengthen the bridge, informed PWD officials.

“Earlier repair work was scheduled from October 11 to 20. But major work of the finger type joint is of welding and micro concreting, which needs proper dry period. Presently, the state is witnessing post monsoon showers, which are likely to continue for few more days. Taking note of it, PWD has postponed the scheduled repair work,” PWD engineer said.

Repair work of the bridge will be taken up by the Mumbai-based agency which had strengthened the bridge two years back.

The agency will take up the bridge repair work under defects liability period, officials informed.

During the 10 days, partial closure of the bridge will be taken up round the clock. Traffic from both directions will have to move from one lane, while workers will carry the work on the other lane, PWD official said.
