Margao: Officials along with panchayat members from Benaulim and neighbouring villages inspected river Sal to identify sites along the river where sewerage water is being released. In keeping with an NGT order, the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) has begun inspection along the length of the Sal.

On Tuesday morning, officials from the BDO’s office, Cansaulim Health Centre’s health officer, local sarpanch and ward members inspected the river to identify places where sewage water is being released into it. In Benaulim at Khareband, it was observed that though there was no visible dumping of sewage water, there was a large amount of water hyacinths growing along the surface of the water. Inspections were also conducted in Seraulim.

The BDO in a list of villages that the inspection was to be conducted also includes areas of Varca, Orlim, Cavelossim and Navelim. Inspection of river Sal in the remaining villages is scheduled for later this month.

The villages of Colva and Betalbatim were also listed in Tuesday’s inspections, however, it was revealed that there were no water bodies in those villages that emptied into the Sal.

The Central Pollution Control Board had noted in its report that was submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that sewage discharge by urban population, cattle washing, solid waste dumping were the major issues facing the river.

It observed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) and Bio chemical Oxygen demand (BOD) were within the prescribed limits throughout the season except in the months of May and September. Faecal coliform and total coliform count were however found to be high due to the discharge of untreated pollutants in the river and the lack of flow of fresh water.
