Officials of the agency appointed by the government for setting up IIT in Cotarli area of Sanguem conducted a contour and ecological survey of the proposed site on Tuesday.

Although the officials, who were present at the site, did not divulge any information; when asked deputy collector of Sanguem Ajay Gaude, he confirmed that a survey was being conducted.

Two buses of IRB personnel, accompanied by the Sanguem police staff, were present at the site. Gaude informed that since the land belongs to the government there was no need to seek permission from anybody to carry out survey.

Farmer Costancio Mascarenhas, who was present at the site, informed the media persons that “his family has been cultivating paddy fields since last several generations. Similarly, around 40 families have also the right over the area where the government is intending to construct the IIT.  For the construction of the IIT, about 20 lakh square metre of land is required but the government land is only around 9 lakh.”

“The other area belonging to us is being taken by the government by giving us falls assurances such as we shall get sufficient compensation, jobs etc. We have our strong opposition to the construction of IIT because of paddy fields and orchard areas. We are also opposing the project because it is being constructed by cutting the mountain. We get water for the cultivation from the springs flowing down from this mountain,” he added.
