In a bid to tap the extraordinary music potential seen in some special children, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has introduced music subjects namely vocal, harmonium and guitar for special children studying in Class IX and Class XI, from this academic year.

“The subjects would be introduced to special children in Class X and Class XII from the next academic year,” informed a Goa Board official, adding that in the future, the Goa Board could introduce these subjects to the general students studying in the same classes.

“These subjects will be handled by the faculties at the Goa College of Music,” the official added, stating that the Board of Studies (Music) of Goa Board also comprises the Goa College of Music staff.

The music classes will have both, theory as well as practical sections.

Interestingly, the syllabus for Children With Special Needs (CWSN) studying from Class IX to Class XII was modified to their individual needs by Goa Board, if they found it difficult to cope with the curriculum in force. The Academic Council of the Goa Board had approved an improvised the Scheme for Special Children, in the past.

The number of Children With Special Needs appearing for the SSC and HSSC examinations as conducted by the Goa Board is on the rise in Goa, since past few years.

It was further informed that the Goa Board has revised the syllabus for commerce-based subjects under the vocational stream, for the higher secondary section.

“This revised syllabus for Class XI will be implemented from the academic year 2020-21, while for Class XII implemented from the academic year 2021-22,” the official stated, pointing out that the subjects with revised syllabus (scope and limitation) include Banking, Insurance, Computer Application and Accountancy.

The Board of Studies (Commerce-based subjects) of the Goa Board has already submitted the revised syllabus for these subjects.

“This revision of syllabus is a routine exercise undertaken to upgrade the syllabus in modern context,” the Goa Board official noted.
