MMC fish market partially gutted in Vasco

Vasco: The fish market, belonging to Mormugao Municipal Council, was partially gutted, while a vegetable kiosk was totally engulfed in the flames, in a major fire incident that was reported at Chhotta Bazaar, Baina, Vasco during the wee hours of Tuesday.

As per available information from station fire officer Dilip Bicholkar attached to the Vasco fire station, they received a call from Panaji headquarters at around 1.30 am, informing about the fire incident at the fish market complex belonging to MMC at Chhotta Bazaar, Baina.

The fire personnel rushed to the site with a fire tender. Since, the gate of the fish market complex was locked, the fire personnel broke opened the gate and started the fire extinguishing operation.

Wooden and fiber baskets, stocks of fish stored by the fish vendors, electrical appliances, asbestos sheets and other material were gutted in the flames.

“A vegetable kiosk located outside the fish market was totally engulfed in the flames”, said Bicholkar.

He disclosed that there were no casualties reported in the incident.

“The total loss estimated in the fire is around Rs 50,000. We have saved property worth Rs 5 lakh. Due to timely intervention, we managed to stop the flames from spreading to the residential areas. There are several houses in the backyard of the fish market,” said Bicholkar.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established.

“It is not known, whether the fire broke out from the fish market complex or from the vegetable kiosk,” he said.
