PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that the mining case, which was expected to be heard by the Supreme Court on April 15, is now likely to be delayed to after April 19 as it hasn’t been listed on the board.

Speaking to REPORTERS, Sawant said that the government expected the mining matter to come up on Monday, but that it hasn’t been listed. “The mining matter may come up on or after April 19,” he said.

Sawant also said that the officers concerned with the matter are in New Delhi to discuss the case with the lawyer. “We will file a positive affidavit in the mining matter,” he said.

Mining in Goa came to a halt on March 16, 2018, after the Supreme Court quashed the second renewal of 88 mining leases. The industry has seen ups and downs since the illegal mining scam first broke.

Earlier, mining came to a halt in Goa in September 2012.

Recently, mining dependents under the banner of Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) sat on a three-day protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to create awareness about the problems they’re facing.

The case pertains to appeals filed by mining companies after the high court of Bombay at Goa dismissed their petitions challenging the Goa, Daman and Doi (Abolition and Declaration of Mining Leases) Act, 1987.

Under Portuguese mining law, the appellants were granted concessions which were then converted into mining leases under the Abolition Act. The Supreme Court has now been called upon to decide the constitutional validity of the provisions of the Act.

The GMPF had urged the state government to file supporting affidavits in the matter for the early resumption of mining in the state.

Former chief minister Manohar Parrikar had sent multiple letters to the ministry of mines, emphasising the social-economic crisis prevalent in Goa due to stoppage of mining and proposing a legislative cure for early resumption of mining through appropriate amendment to the Abolition Act.
