PANAJI: Activists representing various social groups, NGOs and political parties protested against casinos at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Tuesday. The protest was organized by Aam Aurat Aadmi Against Gambling.
Last week, the organisation lodged a police complaint regarding a website advising tourists how to get women for various activities, including gambling.
AAAAG convener Sabina Martins, said the state has suffered immensely due to casino gambling where prosperous families have become paupers, and assets and properties of people have been usurped under the pretext of clearing debts.
The rules and gaming commissioner haven’t been put in place yet and there is no check on the money charged either, she said.
Martins went on to list many social drawbacks of casinos, saying hotels are getting a bad reputation as casino visitors with escorts seek lodging while public property like jetties, pavements, footpaths are appropriated.
Subsequent governments have gone against the objective of the Goa Gambling Prevention Act and have brought about several amendments to promote casino gambling instead of curtailing the ill effects, she said.
