Margao: The Carmona village panchayat, which had thwarted attempts of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (GTDC) to put up mobile toilets at the Zalor beach after a NoC from the Varca panchayat, has decided to issue permission for the same.

Both the panchayats claim that the Zalor beach comes under their jurisdiction.

Carmona residents had in June this year thwarted plan of the tourism department to install toilets on the grounds that they were not taken into confidence though the department possessed NOC from the Varca panchayat following which GTDC had written a letter to the Carmona panchayat seeking its NoC to put up mobile toilets at the beach.

Speaking to this daily, Carmona sarpanch Allwyn Jorge said that a resolution was taken unanimously during a special meeting on Monday to issue NoC to the tourism department to put up toilets at the beach adding, “On June 26, 2019 when the tourism department tried to put up toilets on the Zalor Beach, the villagers had vociferously objected to such an extent that the trucks carrying the mobile toilets had to return back and were put up at Seraulim beach.”

Residents of both Varca and Carmona villages are claiming that the Zalor beach comes under the jurisdiction of the respective panchayats. While Varca cites survey plans, Carmona villagers have said that the records were manipulated during the survey process and that they had resolved to file a petition in HC over the issue.

“Zalor beach belongs to Carmona but the issue is being politicised due to an upcoming hotel project in the area. We will also be requesting the tourism department to put up high-rise four-arm lights at the beach. We will support any development at Zalor beach as long as Carmona panchayat is taken into confidence. I consider it as a victory for the people of my village who are emotionally attached to Zalor Beach,” said Jorge.

GTDC, in its letter to the panchayat, said that mobile toilets were being installed as part of the development of coastal circuit II under the Swadesh Darshan

Scheme.
