PANAJI: Citizens have raised time and again raised concerns about the manner in which motor driving schools operate in the state. The state transport department has now decided to put such worries to rest by carrying out an audit of all 135 motor driving schools registered with it. The department has stated that schools failing the audit will face strict action, including cancellation of licence to operate.

The third party audit will begin in September, and driving schools which are found to be meeting the required standard will also be ‘acknowledged and graded suitably’ after the audit is completed, the department has stated.

“With the objective of enforcing concept of road safety on Goan roads, the transport department has decided to appoint International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) Gurgaon, Haryana, to undertake an audit of all 135 motor driving schools in Goa. The schools will be thoroughly audited to ensure that they meet all parameters laid down in the Motor Vehicle Act and rules,” the order states.

The auditing process, the transport department has said, will ensure that drivers are properly trained in all aspects and that the process of obtaining driving licences does not remain a mere formality.

The audit is expected to keep a check on substandard driving schools and help identify those which are not upto mark. Several parameters will also be reviewed and driving schools will be asked to upgrade themselves or face action.

ICAT was established in 2006 with two centres at Manesar, Haryana. It is a division of NATIS, under the ministry of heavy industries and is an autonomous body.

The centre provides services to the industry in all domains of automotive and non-automotive development, such as noise vibration, fatigue, passive safety, etc.

In the last six years, around 20 more motor driving schools have opened in Goa. They are issued licences by the state transport department to operate. The criteria needed for starting a driving school is one instructor with a five-year-old driving licence and a minimum of one car on which driving can be taught.
