Panaji: The enforcement wing of the state transport department wants new premises at the Dhargalim checkpost to enable better monitoring of visitors to Goa and to reduce tax violations. They have written to the director of transport in this regard.

There are full-fledged government checkposts at Polem and Molem, where vehicles entering the state are inspected and passenger tax imposed. This multi-purpose checkpost is manned by road transport officers, police, excise and forest offices, all under one roof. At Dhargalim, however, different departments have different checkposts, which are spread across the area. For instance, while the RTO checkpost is on the Pernem border, the excise checkpost is at Patradevi.

There is no gate barrier at Dhargalim, so 100% checking of vehicles is not possible. Vigil is, therefore, kept on highways, yet travellers are able to hoodwink the RTO and enter Goa, a transport official said.

"There is no mechanism to catch them, nor do we have the manpower to chase them. However, we often catch them when they are returning to their states and slap a 25% penalty over the existing tax, on them," he added.

He said that opposite the excise checkpost is a government property measuring 6,000sqm, on which a multi-purpose checkpost along the lines of that at Molem/Polem could be constructed.

"The proposed checkpost will make it mandatory for all vehicles to pass through. A plan for the same along with Forms I and XIV have been submitted to the directorate of transport," he said, adding that all other departments have to be linked with this in order for it to be a success.

REPORTERS had reported earlier this month that the transport department has recorded a huge increase in revenue collection compared to previous years at its Dhargalim checkpost owing to a tourist influx. The Dhargalim checkpost alone generated over Rs 1.5 crore in October.
