Thousands throng Vasco’s Swatantra Path to witness Narkasur effigy contest

A large number of people thronged Swatantra Path in Vasco to witness the Narkasur effigy contest, organized by Murgao Hindu Samaj Shree Mahalaxmi Pujanotsav Samitti-2018 late Monday evening.

In all, 24 groups participated in the contest as it was limited to the Mormugao taluka.

Some foreign tourists, who had come to witness the contest danced to the beats of drums being played by revellers.

The participating groups displayed the effigies at Subrai Joshi
Chawk.

MHSSMPS president Hemant Fadte, MHS central committee vice president Shekhar Khadapkar and joint treasurer Pratap Gaonkar, MHSSMPS vice president Sudesh Bhosle, general secretary Prakash Gawas, joint secretary  Vasudev Salgaonkar, treasurer Dilip Kajale, besides Vinayak Ghonge, Vijay Nagvenkar, Shekhar Kalangutkar and other executive committee members of the organisations were present on the occasion.

The effigies were judged by a panel of experts in the field of art, through the live video footage.

The new method for judging the effigies at the contest was adopted to bring transparency, and to prevent injustice to any of the groups, said MHSSMPS president Fadte

Police team led by Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo kept a strict vigil.

Meanwhile, after the Narkasur effigies were burnt, people were seen putting up sky lanterns (akash kandils) and lighting rows of lamps at their houses during the wee hours of Tuesday.
