PANAJI: With the Census 2011 data showing a sharp decline in the number of Konkani speakers across the country, language activists are now planning to undertake a massive awareness campaign, titled Vision 2021, in a bid to better the numbers that the 2021 census will reflect.
As a part of campaign, the Jagotik Konknni Songhotton (JKS), at its global assembly in August, is expected to chalk-out the plan of action and ensure its implementation.

REPORTERS had reported on June 29 that Konkani is the only scheduled language in the country to have witnessed a negative decadal growth between Census 2001 and Census 2011. This was according to recently released data which indicated that of the 22 scheduled languages in India, Konkani has been pushed to the 19th spot and that just 0.19% of India’s total population are native Konkani speakers today.

An emergency meeting was convened by the JKS at Kalangann, Mangalore, to discuss the issue. A total of 60 delegates, representing various organisations of various regions, including one each from Saudi and Dubai, participated in the discussion. The speakers as well as participants concluded that while the census figures do not truly represent the real numbers of Konkani speakers, the downslide reflects the decline of Konkani and that it is the leaders of the Konkani movement who are responsible for this situation.
