Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude on Tuesday opined that mining operations are unlikely to resume in the state in November 2018 even if the Parliament adopts an amendment to the Mines and Mineral Development and Regulation Act during its forthcoming winter session.

Speaking to Reporters on Tuesday, Gaude said, “I am of the opinion that even if the Parliament amends the MMDR Act in the forthcoming winter session, mining activities may resume in Goa only in November 2019.”

He said the government has to comply with directions and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court on the resumption of mining operations.

It is pertinent to note here that Minister for Public Works and senior MGP leader Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar has time and again maintained that mining activities would resume by November this year.

Admitting that people from the mining belt have been at the receiving end of the closure of mining operations after the SC order, Gaude said, “As part of the government, we must be sincere while uttering our words on mining issue. The government should not give false hope to mining dependants that mining will resume in November 2018.”

He asserted that even if the Parliament adopts an amendment to  the MMDR Act during the forthcoming winter session the resumption of mining operations will take at least a year as all directives and guidelines vis-à-vis mining operations will have to be abided by the state government.
