PANAJI: Goa on Wednesday filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka over diversion of the Mhadei’s water.

Pending hearing and disposal of the contempt petition, Goa has sought that Karnataka be directed to restore the flow of the Mhadei’s water to its natural course. The petitioners have also sought forthwith plugging of the interconnecting channel, thereby restoring uninterrupted water flow into Goa.

The state government has further prayed that the Karnataka regime, its chief secretary, principal secretary, chief water resources engineer and Mallikarjun B G, managing director of the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd, be issued showcause notices.

While alleging that they wilfully and deliberately violated the Supreme Court’s orders, the Goa government has asked that Karnataka be punished for inviting contempt of the court.

The Goa government has pointed out that grave and irreparable losses, which would not be able to be compensated in monetary terms, would be caused to it if the Karnataka government did not immediately plug the interconnecting channel. It stated that it first learned of the diversion of water at Kankumbi on July 23 and claimed that the move was made in an unexpected and clandestine manner.
