The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, which is an ally of the BJP-led coalition government, on Wednesday said that it will decide by March 30 on contesting the Lok Sabha elections in the state.

The MGP has already made it clear that it would fight by-polls in the three assembly segments, and that party president Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar would contest the Shiroda by-poll.

Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Dhavalikar said, “The MGP will hold a meeting soon to decide on contesting the Lok Sabha elections.  A   decision will be taken by March 30. People have been urging us to contest the South Goa parliamentary seat along with the by-elections.”

Stating that the MGP is the oldest party in the state having a strong hold over the Goan electorate, Dhavalikar asked as why the party should not contest the Lok Sabha polls.

Asked why a coalition partner wants to fight the elections against its ally, the MGP chief retorted:  “We have not signed any agreement with any political party that we will not contest the elections.”

The MGP’s decision to contest the three by-polls has ruffled the feathers of other coalition partners.

Goa Forward Party president and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai has reckoned that the MGP fighting the by-polls against the BJP would give advantage to other political parties especially the Congress.
