Around 70 villagers of Camorlim along with members of Camorlim panchayat on Monday gheraoed the PWD executive engineer (roads) Ratnakaran Challan demanding immediate repair of Uzro-Sanfator road stretch along the Margao-Ponda highway. Sarpanch of Loutolim Inacinho Fernandes and former sarpanch of Rachol Joseph Vaz were amongst the protesters.

After submitting a memorandum to Challan, the Camorlim sarpanch Basilio Fernandes said, “The road had developed large potholes and the PWD had patched them up with rubble. But that too has started to crumble under the weight of heavy traffic. Some accidents have also taken place along the stretch. Dust pollution is another major problem. Thick layer of dust enters houses in the vicinity. We want a motorable road.”

The memorandum further states that this is the third time that the villagers have brought the issue to the notice of PWD but it did not pay heed and as a result, accidents continued to occur along the stretch.

“PWD executive engineer has promised to inspect the road on Tuesday. The villagers have decided to remain present at the site to appraise him about the road condition and dust pollution caused by the rubble-filled road,” the sarpanch added.

An elderly woman Maria Dias, who was part of the protesting group, explained about the problems caused due to the dust gathered in her house.

When contacted, executive engineer Challan said that the works at the road stretch from Ambora to Borim will be started soon as the estimate has been prepared and soon a tender will be floated. He said that half of the stretch will be repaired after the estimation of the works is done. It may be recalled that several accidents have occurred on the said road stretch with some
