Panaji: The directorate of women and child development has always remained "neglected". It needs to be revamped and an empowered committee comprising experts will be soon constituted, minister for women and child development Vishwajit Rane, said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Rane said he has received suggestions from academics for changes in the functioning of the women and child development directorate, when questioned about his new ministry.

"I have become minister of women and child development for the first time," said Rane, indicating that he is still learning about his new ministry.

For five years, from 2012 to 2017, the portfolio of women and child development was held by BJP MLA from Saligao, Dilip Parulekar.

The women and child directorate has come under fire several times in the past, over the functioning of the government-run Apna Ghar. There have been repeated incidents of children and juveniles escaping from the home.

In the last three-four months, there have been at least three incidents wherein children fled from Apna Ghar after creating a ruckus, despite security being heightened after several incidents of runaway juveniles. The Apna Ghar was renovated recently, with recreational facilities incorporated.
