Ponda: The death of an Uttar Pradesh native in an accident at Ponda on Thursday, has taken the death toll in the area to five within a fortnight, police sources said.
Bulesh Potun, 35, a resident of Khandola, Marcel, was riding to his rented accommodation when an oncoming jeep crashed into his motorcycle, near Banastarim market, on Thursday. Potun, who sustained serious injuries, was immediately rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) by an EMRI ambulance, but breathed his last on the way there. The doctors on duty at GMC's casualty wing declared him dead on arrival. His body has been preserved at the GMC's mortuary for an autopsy.
Ponda police have registered an offence against the driver of the jeep, who fled from the spot following the accident.
This is the fifth road accident leading to an equal number of deaths in 15 days in Ponda. In the month's first accident on April 4, William Lobo, 35, a resident of Collem, died after a speeding truck hit his motorcycle at Dharbandora. This was followed by the death of a Bihar native, Pradeep Kumar Jha, 27, by another speeding truck at Usgao on April 6. Shakila Ali, 40, a resident of Shahpur, was crushed to death by a truck carrying LPG cylinders, on April 11. Yogesh Satkalkar, 34, from Vanttem, was fatally knocked down by a scooter at Khandepar on April 17.
