Top diagnostic device launched

PANAJI: Aiming to boost the state government’s mission to save lives, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday launched ‘I-STAT system’, a state-of-the-art comprehensive point-of-care testing device that can identify and provide 29 different results from blood samples within minutes.

With this launch, Goa has become the first state in the country to introduce the innovative system which will provide real-time, lab-quality and accurate results for a wide-range of tests in two minutes.

The state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Colorcon, a private firm working in the area of pharmaceutical sector which has donated 10 handheld devices and cartridges through its corporate social responsibility initiative to the health department. The donated handheld tools and cartridges are worth Rs 80 lakh are manufactured by Abbott.

Addressing media persons at the secretariat, Rane said the launch of the handheld tool for testing blood samples will strengthen the government’s mission to save lives.

“Colorcon has supported the state government by providing 10 ‘I-STAT’ devices along with cartridges. The company has already donated such devices for the cardiac department of the GMC, which has helped a lot,” the minister said, adding that the new devices will be kept at major government hospitals and in some 108 ambulances.

He said the company will review the use of the devices after March 2018 and accordingly will decide on enhancing the initiative in the state.

The fully automated I-STAT system is an advanced handheld diagnostic tool that offers a broad menu of tests for diagnostic and treatment indicators related to disease management and clinical practice guidelines.  Using just two or three drops of blood, the system provides time-sensitive tests in few minutes.

General manager of Abbott Point of Care Shyamakant Giri said that this system provides critical care test on different 29 parameters.

Rajesh Parab of Colorcon said the firm has been working in public health sector in Goa for the last nine years, and is happy to be part of the state government’s mission.
