Panaji: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar's cabinet on Wednesday decided to hand over Rs 5 crore as aid to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

The money will be used to help states affected by cyclone Ockhi, he said, adding that the Lakshadweep islands and some southern states were badly affected by the storm.

"In Goa, the damage was felt more in the coastal belt of Morjim and Canacona. Water entered shacks. There was damage but it was not cyclonic as such," Parrikar said and pointed out that the cyclone coincided with the Super Moon.

Ockhi, which produced torrential rain in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu five days ago and also claimed several lives, rapidly weakened into a deep depression on Wednesday and was not likely to hit the Gujarat coast near Surat as predicted earlier.
