The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 4 in the state.

The weather department has predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated very heavy rainfall on Saturday and heavy to very heavy rainfall during subsequent three days till August 4.

The state has been witnessing intense rainfall since Tuesday night till Friday evening, with the IMD recording over  39.2 mm of excess rain in last 24 hours.

Old Goa in North and Sanguem in South reported the heaviest rainfall between Thursday 8 am and Friday 8 am with nearly 102.4 mm and 74.5 mm of rain respectively, the daily rainfall data showed.

“Heavy rain is likely to be accompanied with winds of speed 30-40 kmph for the first week of August and the spatial distribution of very heavy rainfall is likely to increase on 3rd and 4th August” the IMD said.

It added that as the increased rainfall activity is very likely to continue for four or more days, special attention may be required for areas which are vulnerable for weather-related disasters.

The weather systems which are likely to enhance rainfall activity over Goa are strengthening of Westerly winds at 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea-level, and likely formation of a low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal by  August 4.

After receiving one of the highest rainfalls in the country till mid-July, the state, so far, has recorded 2294.6 mm rainfall, excess of 17 per cent.
