Some outstation trawlers, stranded off Khariwada coast in Vasco in view of the cyclonic storm, have run out of fuel to make return journey to their respective states.

Speaking to this daily, All India Malayalee Association’s Goa state secretary P C Prasad, who has stood by the stranded fishermen from Cochin-Kerala and other states from the day the trawlers took refuge at Khariwada coast to avoid the cyclone, said that “of the stranded trawlers, nearly 10 from Cochin-Kerala and Tamil Nadu have run out of fuel, besides others. Hence, the All India Malayalee Association Goa members have requested the state government to make provision of fuel (diesel) so that the stranded trawlers can go back to their destinations, however, we are waiting for a response from the government authorities.”

He disclosed that All India Malayalee Association’s Goa unit on Wednesday arranged vehicles for stranded crew members of trawlers from Kerala, so also from Tamil Nadu, to help them go back to their native states.

“It is our earnest request to the state administration to make immediate arrangement of fuel for stranded fishing trawlers,” Prasad stated. He said he has provided a list of trawlers, which have run out of fuel, to the authorities.

“Mormugao Port Trust has provided 10 kilograms of rice and other essential commodities such as water, snacks, besides medicines,” Prasad informed. He disclosed that Sesa Goa has also extended help on humanitarian grounds.

Deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Mahadev Araundekar informed that he had directed the Mormugao mamlatdar Satish Prabhu to prepare a list of the trawlers which are in need of fuel. “The Mormugao mamlatdar has already sent a report to the district collector about the arrangements made by authorities including MPT to provide relief to the affected crew members,” Araundekar stated.
