Rlys asked to prepare disaster mgmt plan for Navelim flyover

Margao: Deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Salcete, Uday Prabhudessai has directed the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) to prepare its disaster management plan with respect to the railway flyover connecting Navelim to Margao.

The KRCL has also been directed to submit all details about the structural audit of the flyover last conducted. Prabhudessai issued these directions while chairing a review meeting with representatives of KRCL, traffic police, and consumer network forum, GOACAN, on Thursday.

Deputy manager, public relations, KRCL, Baban Ghatge, pointed out that the overbridge has been found to be structurally sound. However, in the absence of any report of the structural audit, Prabhudessai directed the KRCL to submit all details about the last such exercise conducted by it at the earliest.

As the maintenance of the surface of the overbridge is the responsibility of the state government, Ronald Martins of GOACAN pointed out that the PWD has failed to carry out any surface repairs to the road for many years, resulting in the deterioration of the road, and thereby posing a threat to the stability of the structure. Martins also underlined the need for an evacuation plan in place by the KRCL in case of any disaster pertaining to the railway overbridge.
