‘Redevelopment plan of Mapusa market is ready’

Mapusa: "The plan of proposed redevelopment plan of Mapusa municipal market is ready and we are confident that within two months, the government will grant all necessary approvals to the project," MMC chief Rohan Kavlekar said on Wednesday.

Following the recent directives from chief minister Manohar Parrikar pertaining to the redevelopment of the Mapusa muncipal market, Mapusa Muncipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday convened a special meeting of stakeholders to put up the detailed plan before them, inorder to seek their consent.

The MMC chairperson said that from the project's estimated expenditure of Rs 20 crore, Rs 14 crore will be spent to upgrade and strengthen the existing structure and services, and Rs 6 crore on beautification works.

On Tuesday, the municipality organized a special screening of a power point presentation by consultant Ashwinikumar Prabhu, of the proposed market redevelopment, for the office bearers of Mapusa Merchants Association.

Members of Mapusa Merchants Association expressed happiness over the proposed draft plan, but have made a few suggestions, which include that the council first put in place an effective drainage system for the market to avoid water-logging and flooding during monsoon.

The merchants' association also raised apprehension over existing structure and brought to the notice of council that re-plastering needs to be urgently done. Another suggestion made was to extend the sewerage line network in the market area.

Mapusa Merchants Association president Ashish Shirodkar suggested that core cabling network for market be done to avoid frequent digging in the market.

"The draft plan looks good and we hope the focus of the plan is not only on cosmetic looks of the market but also on providing better services," Shirodkar said.

Last week, the chief minister, during a review meeting with all authorities concerned, had given an in-principal approval for the renovation and upgradation of the market's old block.

The special task force for the implementation of the project will comprise representatives of PWD, JIACA, GSUDA, MMC councilors with the chairperson as its head.
