Panaji: The staff of PWD division I and V, buildings and roads, presently housed in the heritage building, near the Patto bridge, here, are reluctant to relocate to their 'new' office space at the Junta House building, claiming the building is unsafe.

The staff of the two PWD divisions, approximately 100 of them, have been directed by the government to shift to the Junta House annex from November 15, to make space for the Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF).

"The order for us to shift came about a week ago. We don't mind going anywhere else besides Junta House because the building is unsafe," said a staffer.

They have been asked to shift owing to the second edition of SAF which is scheduled to be held from December 15 to 23. The office premises will be renovated to serve as a gallery for one of the festival's exhibitions. Sources said the PWD staff will not return to the building at Patto even after the week-long festival ends.

At Junta House, the third and fourth floors have been allotted to them, from the entry on Dr Wolfango D'Silva Road, leading to EDC, a non-functioning lift on that side of the building has added to the staffers' woes.

"We have one specially-abled person, a blood pressure patient, a pregnant woman and a heart patient. It will be difficult for these people to access the office without a lift, perhaps even put their health at risk," another staffer said.

Supporting their plea, the Goa Government Employees Association has requested the government to either keep the staff in the existing premises or to shift them elsewhere.

"There are have been complaints of pieces of the ceiling falling off. SAF is held once a year. It doesn't make sense to shift 100 people for a 7-day event," association president John Nazareth said.
