Public hearing sees support for proposed Kakoda garbage plant

CURCHOREM: The garbage treatment plant proposed at Kakoda-Curchorem received overwhelming support at a public hearing held at the site on Tuesday with majority of attendees raising their hands in support.

South Goa additional collector Johnson Fernandes was the moderator while GSPCB’s Dr Mohan Girap was also present at the public hearing organised by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and department of Science and Technology at the garbage dumb site at Kakoda on Tuesday.

Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council chairperson Sushant Naik, councillors, sarpanch and panch members of Xeldem and Assolda village panchayats, senior citizens’ association president Chandrakant Malkarni and others were also present.

At the outset, managing director of Solid Waste Management Corporation Sanjit Rodrigues made an audio-visual presentation on the Saligao plant and briefed the gathering on the visit by a delegation to similar plant in Italy explaining the advantages of having the plant.

Social activist Sanjay Dessai admitted that the plant is essential but demanded that there should be transparency on cost of the plant, the contractor, system of recovery, transportation, monitoring etc.

One Dattatray Govind Prabhudessai said that there should not be opposition to the plant for the sake of it adding, “The opposition should be constructive. Those who oppose should come out with alternative plan. We should cooperate for the construction of the project.”

BJP spokesperson Ashish Karmali, supporting the proposal, said that he has seen the operation of Saligao plant and it runs efficiently even when trucks bring un-segregated waste it still works. One Anil Srasolkar said that the proposed project is essential but the government should clear people’s apprehensions.

MLA Cabral said that the project was supposed to come up in 2014 and the work was also tendered but due to the politicisation, it got delayed and instead the project came up at Saligao.

He further said that the project opponents could not come forward with alternate plan despite repeated appeals. He appealed the audience to raise their hands if they support the plant and majority of the villagers raised their hands in support. He demanded that only the garbage from the four talukas of Dharbandora, Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona be allowed to dump.

Johnson Fernandes and Sanjit Rodrigues said that there was positive response to the project during the public hearing and doubts raised by some persons were cleared and after obtaining the environment clearance the construction work will start.
