Porvorim: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar said an independent disaster management mechanism will be in place in Goa by next March.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Parrikar said that the setting up of an independent disaster management mechanism is under process. "Discussions have already taken place. People are already working to set it up," he said.

While the people's perception is that the state's disaster management mechanism is not very effective, Parrikar said the basic problem is that those persons who tackle disasters may also be the ones facing the brunt of the disaster.

"Hence, we need a completely independent disaster management mechanism which will function on the same pattern as data recovery centres," he said.

Parrikar said Goa has two separate data recovery units. "A mirror image of Goa's entire IT data is stored around 500-1000km away," he added. Similarly, an independent disaster management mechanism is required, he said.

Parrikar further said the state does not have standard operating procedures for disaster management.

"It was discussed at a meeting on Tuesday and the revenue minister has been asked to frame standard operating procedures for the same," the chief minister said.
