New diagnostic tool at GMC to provide instant test results

Panaji: The directorate of health services (DHS) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with Colorcon for sponsoring 10 Abbott-manufactured i-SAT systems, a point-of-care testing equipment.

"Goa is the first state in the country to use the system in public health care. It is already being used by the Goa Medical College's cardiology department, and it is very happy with the results," said health minister Vishwajit Rane at a press conference.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Colorcon will not only sponsor the equipment, but also provide for their maintenance. "Thereafter, a meeting will be held to review future requirements," said Rane, adding that the state would need about 100 such systems.

Cartridges used for i-STAT that cost between Rs 200-Rs 500 will also be sponsored by the pharmaceutical company, which will spend about Rs 80 lakh towards the project till March next year.

The health minister said no private hospital in the state has the new system.

"The i-STAT gives results in just two minutes," Rane said, adding that this kind of technological upgrade will help the state achieve its objective of "saving lives."

Shyamakant Giri, general manager and country head, India and Africa, Abbott Point of Care, said i-STAT can be used on 29 parameters. Cartridges are also available for a wide range of diagnostic tests.

"Tests can be done in minutes by using just two or three drops of blood," said Giri.

The equipment is user-friendly and no training is required to handle it. Not only the tests can be done faster, but results can be forwarded to the hospital, or doctor concerned through wifi, he added.
