Margao lad to pursue Unesco affiliated PG course

Panaji: A youth from Margao is set to become, probably, the first Goan to pursue a Unesco affiliated masters programme in the Netherlands.

Mandar Prabhu Shirodker, who was awarded a gold medal at Symbiosis College in Pune on completing his BTech programme there, has been chosen to undergo the postgraduate programme in environment and technology at IHE in Netherlands.

One of the main focus of the master's programme is water management and Shirodker says that it the water issues he saw growing in Margao that got him interested in learning the latest methods in recycling sewage and such issues.

Shirodker, who completed his schooling at Loyola High School, Margao, and graduation at Damodar College, Margao, was chosen for the masters in environment and technology course based on a letter of motivation he sent to the institute, explaining why he wants to pursue the programme.

He hopes to resolve some of the water woes faced by his home town of Margao, on completion of the two-year programme."The sources of clean water are fast depleting. And I see the gutters overflowing in Margao. The need of the hour is to mitigate these issues by finding other options to generate clean drinking water, like new ways of treating waste water," Shirodker said.

Shirodkar hopes to bag a scholarship that can fund his studies.
