Landowner blocks access to Canacona primary school

Canacona: Students of government primary school, Paryekatta in Cola, Canacona, were inconvenienced for half-a-day on Monday as the access to the school premises was blocked allegedly by one of the landowners in the neighbourhood.

"Today, as usual, when the children were walking to the school, they noticed a compound wall in front of the school blocking their access. A huge thorny branch was put on the pathway to the school," a resident said. The school is around 70m from the road.

The students with the teacher had to patiently wait in the sun along the road till the matter was resolved. Local panchayat members were alerted who informed the police and education authorities. Panchayat members Guru Gaonkar, Pandhari Prabhudessai, ex-sarpanch Vinay Naik, and social worker Harishchandra Kholkar and the police rushed to the site.

A woman, Sonu Velip, who lives nearby said she wanted to build a house just before the school as the property belongs to her family, the police said.

Village panchayat leaders convinced her and later Canacona PSI Tukaram Chavan cleared the wall and other barricades much to the relief of the students. They entered class only at 11am.

Police said that patrolling would be done at night so that the access is not blocked under the cover of darkness. Assistant district education inspector (ADEI) Ganesh Shet also visited the site and will be conducting an enquiry before sending a report to the education director, sources said.
