VALPOI: Health authorities on Tuesday campaigned at Charawnem area of Thane conducting information education communication (IEC) activities for villagers to curb instances of people taking ill with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.

It may be recalled that Charawnem area has seen more than 30 residents being treated for symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea for the last three to four days. The consumption of water from a well located in the area was suspected to be the reason behind the symptoms.

When ‘The Navhind Times’ reported this news on Tuesday, the health team from Valpoi community health centre visited the village and conducted inspection of the well.

“Health workers have added bleaching powder in the well and the villagers have been instructed not to use the well water,” said a source from Valpoi CHC.

Dr Varsha Kerkar, sanitary inspector, Suresh Pagi and health workers visited the area and addressed around 100 villagers about the measures to be taken during the period. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the team from Manipal Centre for Virus Research has collected samples of blood, stool, saliva and urine and the same have been sent for testing at Manipal University, Udupi and the reports are expected on Wednesday.

The village has been in the news for the last two years as families residing here depend on the open well which is the main source of drinking water.

However, many villagers said that the only solution to avoid such incidents is to stop consuming well water. But whenever the shortage of water is felt, villagers fetch water from such wells.

“I feel only Charawnem dam can resolve this issue of water scarcity during summer. Government must take initiative and resume the work of constructing dam,” said an elderly resident.
