Goa may see heavy rains in next 4 days

Panaji: The Indian meteorological department has issued a yellow weather alert predicting heavy rainfall between June 30 and July 3 as there will be enhanced monsoon activities. 

Heavy rainfall to fairly widespread rain is expected for next four days at isolated places due to upper air circulations over Andhra coast and strengthening of pressure gradient over Arabian Sea.

“Heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places over North Goa and South Goa districts of the state on 30th June & 1st July…  Heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places with very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places of the state on 1st and 2nd July,” the weather bulletin has said.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period as strong winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to prevail over southwest and adjoining west central Arabian Sea.

On Monday, the state experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorm at isolated places; the rainfall was 16.2mm as against 40.1mm normal average, making a deficit of 60 per cent.

Between Sunday 8.30 am and Monday 8.30am Old Goa recorded highest rainfall of 58mm followed by Mapusa (47.2mm), Sankhali (46mm), Quepem (25mm), Canacona (22.6mm).

Panaji received 9.6mm rainfall, which was highest compared to the rainfall witnessed in Margao, Sanguem and Pernem.

According to data released by the IMD, Goa received 1013.4mm precipitation from June 1 to June 29, as compared to 857.3 mm normal average for this period, making surplus of 18 per cent.
