Panaji: Health minister, Vishwajit Rane on Thursday said restructuring and smooth functioning of the Goa Medical College (GMC) and hospital, Bambolim are his top priorities and he will introduce elements of corporate system into the functioning of health institutes.

"As a health minister, my job is to deliver and save people's lives. If I am inefficient, then it will reflect on the system. I will work in a strict manner," Rane told REPORTERS.

Claiming that he has the backing of chief minister, Rane said he would lay emphasis on putting information management system in place, and he had meetings with the health department officials in that regard.

Rane held a meeting with GMC dean, Dr Pradeep Naik on Thursday. He said he would conduct such meetings with the various departmental heads, Directorate of the Health Services (DHS) officials at least once in a month and understand their problems.

The functioning of the premier state-run medical institute was in the eye of the storm for unavailability of free medicines most of the times and people forced to fetch it from outside. "I will order a medical audit shortly," he said.

Stating that he will ensure that there is adequate manpower at all health institutes, the health minister said he would lay stress on preventive medicine, as it would help reduce medical expenses and also burden on state exchequer. The government is planning to restart mobile clinics in villages. But first camps would be held to create awareness in rural areas about various ailments. This will help people take right decisions, he said.

Rane said he had been in office for just three days and it would take at least a month to fully understand the existing problems. "It's a challenge. I will make things work by working meticulously," he said.

Rane will also relook at schemes started during his previous tenure as health minister. Some of the procedures and schemes introduced by Rane were undone after BJP formed the government in 2012.
