Congress legislator of Curtorim Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, on Saturday, urged the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant not to fall prey to the private hospital lobby, “which has been fleecing Goans for many years with exorbitant charges,’’ and instead reconsider to extend DDSSY cover for COVID treatment for the benefit of common man.

In a press note, Lourenco said that “the decision of withdrawing DDSSY cover for the treatment of coronavirus clearly indicates that it has been dictated by the powerful private hospital lobby which has been fleecing Goemkars for many years with exorbitant cost for treatment of ailments including COVID-19. The Chief Minister should not fall prey to this, instead should come to the rescue of the common man of Goa.’’

He stated that Goans are desiring to avail of COVID treatment in private hospitals because the state’s public healthcare facilities are not up to the mark

“And importantly, Goemkars are today feeling reluctant to go to GMC for getting themselves treated for serious ailments as they are afraid of contracting coronavirus,’’ he added.

Lourencco pointed out that since the time the pandemic started, he has been constantly requesting the Chief Minister to get all the private hospitals in Goa under state control for treating the rising cases of coronavirus free of cost.

“I have been also pleading for converting hospital at Dona Paula as a dedicated COVID-19 hospital for North Goa so that Goans are treated free of cost,” he said.
