VASCO: The cruise liner MV Nautica carrying some 553 tourists from Canada, the US, the UK and Australia arrived in the state on Tuesday. The first cruise liner of the season arrived from Abu Dhabi via Mumbai, docking at the cruise berth terminal of the Mormugao Harbour.

The cruise liner will move to Thailand via Mangalore.

Thirty cruise liners are expected to come to Goa this tourist season, bringing in at least 64,000 tourists. Speaking on the sidelines of a function held at Sada, MPT chairman I Jeyakumar said the MPT has proposed to construct additional cruise berthing facilities at Vasco Bay to boost cruise tourism.

The Mumbai-Goa domestic cruise service will begin by December-mid this year, he said adding that a trial run to launch the Baina-Panaji ferryboat service will be conducted by Drishti in the third week of November.

“The Mumbai-Goa domestic cruise service and the Baina-Panaji ferryboat service is likely to be launched in December,” Jeyakumar said.

The one-way fare per passenger of the Mumbai-Goa cruise service will be about Rs 7,000.

The domestic cruise liner will depart from Mumbai at 5 pm and reach Goa next day at around 8 am.

“The domestic cruise service will have facilities such as a restaurant, a swimming pool and others,” Jeyakumar said adding that the proposed service has already evoked keen interest in people for travelling on the cruise liner.

The MPT plans to start more domestic cruise services between Goa and other destinations, as the cruise terminal has been ready with facilities for tourists, he said.

Meanwhile, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa president Savio Messias stressed on the need for beautifying locales from Mormugao Port to Vasco.

Messias told media persons that world’s largest cruise ship ‘Queen Mary 2’ having capacity for over 3,000 passengers will arrive in Goa in 2019.

“The cruise liner is expected to anchor at the Mormugao port on February 9, 2019. Hence there is a strong need for improvement in facilities in and around the port town…”   Messias said.
