Panaji: The consultant tasked with drafting a proper public transport plan for Goa could be on board soon, with Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited receiving expressions of interest from two firms.

Aside from the consultant, five state government departments will also help formulate a comprehensive mobility plan for the state.

"Two bidders have expressed interest and the file has been moved to the government for approval. In the coming 15 days, we will award the work," Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited director Sidharth Kuncalienker said.

The consultant will have to study present and projected mobility needs through a traffic forecasting model and then develop a low-carbon mobility plan for sustainable regional transport for the next 20 years.

The five government agencies that will collaborate with the consultant are directorate of transport, Goa State Urban Development Agency, Corporation of the City of Panaji, directorate of settlement and land records, and the town and country planning department.

"The government is also exploring the possibility of introducing electric buses for public transport in the future," CEO of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited, Swayandipta Pal Chaudhuri, said.

The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs has given its approval for the proposal and will bear 80% of the costs for the consultancy under the urban transport wing. "The balance 20% will have to be borne by the state. The comprehensive mobility proposal will be based on the national urban transport policy," a senior government official said.
