Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to ban the use of plastic bags at the fair to be held during the feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception in the town. Vendors have been warned of fines of up to Rs 5,000 in case of a violation.

"People have been asked to WhatsApp photos and videos of violations to municipality officials," MMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudessai, said on Wednesday. MMC chief officer Johnson Fernandes said no stalls would be allowed on pathways and that the plastic-free initiative would be extended to all fairs and exhibitions in the future.

The week-long fair will be held from December 8-14 on an area belonging to the council near the SGPDA grounds. "This move has saved the council Rs 10 lakh which would have otherwise been paid to the SGPDA for use of its premises," Prabhudessai said.
