Chargesheet in voyeurism case filed

Crime Branch police on Monday filed a chargesheet against five accused persons in the April 2015 Union Minister Smriti Irani voyeurism case.

The 223 page chargesheet has been filed before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Mapusa, police said. Irani and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo (complainant) are among the 37 witnesses in the case, informed police.

On April 3, 2015, Irani had raised an alarm after spotting a camera that was allegedly positioned towards the trial room (located outside) at the Fabindia store in Candolim.

Subsequently based on a complaint lodged by Lobo, police had registered an FIR and arrested four employees of the store Paresh Bhagat, Prashant Naik, Karim Lakhani and Raju Payannche. They were later released on bail. The store manager Chaitrali Sawant was also arrested (procedural arrest) and released on bail after she was granted anticipatory bail in the case. These five accused persons have been named in the chargesheet, informed police.

The chargesheet has been filed under IPC sections 354C (voyeurism), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment) and also under 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology
