Candolim: The Candolim panchayat on Tuesday held a meeting with cattle owners in a bid to put an end to the stray cattle menace in the village, which has been causing a number of accidents and has become a nuisance to tourists.

Candolim panchayat members said they have come up with a plan to curb the problem of stray cattle by getting them adopted. "We will first ask all the cattle owners to identify their cattle and take them from the roads and keep them tied up in the cow sheds. If nobody comes to identify or claim ownership of the stray cattle, or if they don't have a place to keep bovines, then they will be impounded and given to cattle owners having sheds for adoption," panchayat members said.

A few cattle owners with sheds in Candolim have come forward to adopt unclaimed stray cattle and feed them. "These cattle owners will benefit from selling the milk," panchayat members said.

The Candolim panchayat does not have a cattle pound. A similar drive has also been undertaken recently by the Calangute panchayat, which has a cattle pound.

The Arpora-Nagoa panchayat has called a meeting with cattle owners on Sunday with the aim of making the village free from stray cattle.
