Being defence minister was a thankless job says Parrikar

Panaji: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that being the country's defence minister is a thankless job. "Your interaction with the media is restricted, because at times clarifying a news report means you risk revealing your strategy to the enemy," he said.

"The biggest problem was when something used to appear on media and I knew it was not true, but I could not respond. Not talking to the media was difficult for me," Parrikar, who was interacting with children at Bal Bhavan, Panaji, as part of Children's Day celebrations, said.

The former Union defence minister said that while the surgical strikes across the Indo-Myanmar border were a highlight of his tenure, it was a relatively easy decision as there was no fear of retaliation. But when it came to the Western front, things weren't the same. "When you would take a decision on this (Western Front with Pakistan) border, what if there is a reaction? It could break into a war and you require to be prepared for it. That was a different kind of pressure. You need to be prepared well in advance and we had started the preparations in case we needed it."

Speaking to the children about his younger years, Parrikar said that he decided to enter politics as he was grateful for the financial investment the nation makes for IITians like him.
