Panaji: A special court on Monday granted conditional bail to assistant geologist of the state mines and geology department, Ramnath Shetgaonkar. Shetgaonkar was earlier arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) of the Goa Police probing the mining scam. He has now been directed to appear before the investigating officer for 15 days.

The bail was granted against a Rs 1 lakh bond and a local surety of like amount.

Last Friday, Shetgaonkar was taken to the mines department by the SIT as part of the investigation, where around 26 files connected to the case were seized, officials said.

He had been arrested by the SIT on the grounds of being involved in the inspection of several sites in Goa "where illegal extraction of iron ore in lakhs of metric tonnes was carried out. He, however, failed to put criminal action into motion for theft of iron ore by individuals, firms, etc.".
