Colva: Residents of Sao Jose de Areal have united under the banner of Social Justice Forum to demand a solution to the pollution issue that they claim is owing to a carbon factory in the village.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the locals said that their health has been affected ever since the Goa Carbon factory was set up 40 years ago. The unit is owned by the Dempo Group of Companies.

Displaying huge photographs to support their claims, the locals said they are suffering from respiratory problems as carbon particles are deposited on houses, schools, trees, fields and water bodies.

Tenny Paul Fernandes, secretary of the forum, said the issue was raised in the assembly, and urged the government to implement measures to address the problem.
