PANAJI: Goa’s identity has been irrevocably altered by the arrival of colonial ships. Global territories continue to be shaped by war, trade and tourism; delivered to their distant shores by frigates, barges and cruise liners.
Bon Voyage, an exhibition which recently concluded at the Cube Gallery, Moira, featured multi-media installations of reimagined boats that represent the adventure, danger and isolation of protracted sea voyages and how they intricately mirror individual life.

This was a collaborative exhibition of contemporary works by artists, Ekaterina Sisfontes and Sonny Singh.

Having traveled extensively by sea and studied the philosophical nature of marine voyages, Russia-born, Swedish artist, Sisfontes, had an introspection of this expedition as a series of boats that represent the deep solitude of mortal life.

“I interpret the boat of destiny as a minimal frame, only the loose structure of the boat with no concrete body. The skeleton boat, tossed-up by the waves, in one sense means that our lives are often moved by things we cannot control. On the other hand, we exercise great control over the way we handle these circumstances,” she said.

Sonny Singh chose barges “to represent commoditization and monotony.” through his work titled, The Three Barges.

“As carriers of cargo, barges submissively bear heavy burdens across countless ports, repetitively and silently. In a sense, accepting a manufactured standard of faith, success and beauty make us human barges, relaying these uninspired ideas onward without investigation. While the barges and their significance are heavy-handed, the works also make light of the way in which we have all brought into commercialisation in one form or another.” he said.
