300 municipal pumps to be audited for energy use

Panaji: The directorate of municipal administration (DMA) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture company that reports to the ministry of power, on Friday signed an MoU to implement energy efficient projects in the state's public works and sewerage systems.

EESL, through its municipal energy efficiency programme (MEEP), will audit approximately 300 pumps in municipal areas across the state to ascertain their efficiency. Separate audit reports of energy efficiency for each pump set will be prepared and shared with the government, Uttam Kumar, national programme manager, MEEP, told Reporters on Friday.

Some pumps are between 10-15 years old and technological advancement will ensure better energy efficiency, he said.

Once the assessment of existing pumping efficiency is complete, EESL will propose to the government to either retrofit existing equipment or switch to advanced technology to introduce energy efficiency, N Mohan, senior manager (technical) EESL, said.

The entire exercise will be carried out in two phases and will begin with field studies. It will take around four months for audit reports to be prepared.

Goa is the 334th city of 500 throughout the country identified under the Amrut scheme to sign the MoU.

Through the replacement of old, inefficient pump sets in public water works and sewerage systems, approximately 36 million units will be saved each year. This is expected to result in annual savings of over Rs 23 crore, EESL has estimated.

J Ashok Kumar director, signed the MoU on behalf of the DMA, and Uttam Kumar signed on behalf of EESL.
