VALPOI: Charawnem village in Thane has seen more than 30 residents being treated for symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea for the last three to four days.  The consumption of water from a well located in the village is suspected to be the reason behind the symptoms.

The village has been in the news for the last two years as families residing here depend on the open well which is the main source of drinking water.

A mother complained, “My child is admitted to a hospital for the last 3 days, while my husband is also suffering from vomiting and is being treated by the doctors at the community health centre”. Another elderly patient said that most of the people were suffering from vomiting and diarrhea and were admitted to the CHC as well as at a private hospital.

When contacted a CHC official, said that 5 patients were admitted to CHC Valpoi and are 30 patients are being treated at the OPD. Meanwhile, a team from the Manipal Centre for Virus Research has taken samples like blood, stool, saliva and urine and has sent the same for testing to the Manipal University Udupi.

Assistant engineer of Public Work Department, Paste, said, “We have already started supplying water from Dabos which is pumped from the tanks constructed at Pali. Tests from the well indicate presence of coliform bacteria in the water. We have asked our team to clean the wells and urged villagers not to consume water from these wells”.
